A little girl with brown eyes like mine
by Esther Jordan-Muriwai
A little girl
Brown eyes
Like mine
Ready to take the world on
A kōhanga at a time
She loved to hide, she loved to play
Quite the talkative girl I must say!
She started Kura Kaupapa
That special day had arrived
This little girl with brown eyes
Felt happy to be alive
Excited to learn and learn did she
On her return home
She told her father what she now knew
And what could possibly be
But the future had a different path planned
With twists and bends
For here my friends is where my rhyming ends
Bronchiectasis
The name itself has become a sickness, closing all opportunity to a girl of 9 years and yes the sun did shine
However the clouds of torment would come and her home of knowledge became her home of unwanted hatred,
Feathers ruffled the clouds offered a brief solace
For this little girl to fly
And fly she did and in her flight the carrying winds echoed the words of her father as she recalled that day
When he said:
“E mōhio ana koe ki ngā mea katoa, kotahi noa iho ko koe i tēnei ao”- You are unique
In becoming a unique woman the parasitic frustration of her illness bought a different cloud of torment
For the situation was abundant but the solutions were few
Prayer was KING for the day
And almost all hope had been lost
The girl now a woman found a voice of her own
Deep deep deep down inside
She stood up and decided to take back what was rightfully hers
HER LIFE it was time to fly, time to soar through the pain
And in reaching new heights
She became a woman with a voice
A voice that is MINE
